Placing fluoride on the surface of your teeth can help prevent gum disease from progressing by fighting plaque and stopping it from building up on your teeth and gums. Typically, we'll perform fluoride treatment after other forms of gum treatment as an additional preventive measure.
Antibiotics: Depending on the severity of your periodontitis, our dentist may recommend that you take antibiotics to eliminate bacteria. Antibiotics are necessary to help reduce inflammation and make the area around your gums easier to work on. Once the bacteria around your gums have been reduced by the antibiotics, we'll have you come in for other forms of treatment.
Gum Charting: Gum or periodontal charting is the process of measuring the space between your gums and your teeth. When you have sizable pockets, it creates areas where bacteria can thrive and grow. It's important to note that even healthy gums have pockets, as any measuring 1-3 millimeters is normal. However, measures of 4 millimeters and deeper become concerning and can cause tissue to inflame and pull away from your teeth. Our dentist may recommend that you have gum charting done when you visit us or regular periodontal maintenance.
